Can You Deduct Donations Without Itemizing in 2026?

Learn how to deduct qualifying charitable donations without itemizing in 2026, including the $1,000 and $2,000 limits.

The following is a practical overview of the rules and common questions for taxpayers in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Broward County, and South Florida.

A New Deduction for Standard-Deduction Filers

Beginning in tax year 2026, eligible taxpayers who do not itemize can deduct qualifying cash charitable contributions in addition to the standard deduction. The provision restores a tax benefit for some donors who previously received no separate federal deduction for their giving.

How Much Can You Deduct?

The limit is generally $1,000 for eligible taxpayers who are not married filing jointly, or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly. This is a deduction from income, not a dollar-for-dollar credit or direct refund.

Which Gifts Qualify?

Eligible cash gifts to qualifying public charities and religious or nonprofit organizations may count. Donations by check, card, or electronic payment can count as cash contributions. Donations to donor-advised funds and certain supporting organizations are excluded, and gifts to individuals or political campaigns generally are not deductible.

What About Clothes and Furniture?

The new deduction for non-itemizers is generally limited to cash. Gifts of clothing, household items, vehicles, or other property do not qualify for this provision, although qualifying noncash gifts may still be relevant to taxpayers who itemize.

Recordkeeping Rules

Keep bank records or acknowledgments showing the charity, date, and amount. For an individual contribution of $250 or more, obtain the required contemporaneous written acknowledgment. Verify organization eligibility using the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use the standard deduction and still claim qualifying gifts? Yes. Do church donations count? Potentially. Is a personal GoFundMe gift deductible? Generally not, unless paid to a qualifying charity under applicable rules.
