Can Parents Get a Bigger Child Care Tax Credit in 2026?

The following is a practical overview of the rules and common questions for taxpayers in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Broward County, and South Florida.
What Is the Child and Dependent Care Credit?
This federal tax credit helps eligible taxpayers pay for qualifying care so they can work or look for work. It can cover certain daycare, preschool, after-school programs, summer day camps, and qualifying care for dependents unable to care for themselves.
What Changed for 2026?
The maximum credit percentage increased to 50% for eligible lower-income taxpayers beginning in tax year 2026, up from the prior 35% maximum. The percentage steps down as income rises and generally reaches 20% at higher income levels.
Maximum Potential Credit
The eligible-expense limit remains $3,000 for one qualifying person and $6,000 for two or more. At the maximum 50% rate, the credit can reach $1,500 or $3,000 respectively. It is generally nonrefundable, so tax liability and other requirements affect actual benefit.
What Expenses Are Eligible?
Qualifying expenses may include daycare, certain preschool programs, before- or after-school care, and day camps. Overnight camps and regular kindergarten tuition generally do not qualify. For children, the usual age requirement is under 13 when the care is provided.
Working From Home and Employer Benefits
Remote work does not automatically disqualify a parent if care is necessary to work. Tax-free employer dependent care assistance generally cannot be counted again toward the credit. For 2026, the exclusion for qualifying employer dependent care assistance rose to $7,500, or $3,750 for married filing separately, subject to the rules.
How to Claim It
Use Form 2441 and keep provider names, addresses, taxpayer identification numbers where required, amounts paid, and information about each qualifying dependent. The credit can coexist with the Child Tax Credit if separate eligibility rules are satisfied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two children generate a $3,000 credit? Potentially at the highest rate. Does preschool qualify? Certain care-related expenses may. Can a remote employee claim it? Potentially. Is the credit refundable? Generally no.
