Is Social Security Getting a Tax Break in 2026?

Is Social Security tax-free in 2026? Learn how the additional $6,000 senior deduction affects eligible retirees.

The following is a practical overview of the rules and common questions for taxpayers in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Broward County, and South Florida.

Has Social Security Become Tax-Free?

No. Depending on combined income and filing status, up to 85% of Social Security benefits may still be included in taxable federal income. The new tax break is an additional deduction for qualifying older taxpayers, not a repeal of Social Security taxation.

The $6,000 Senior Deduction

Eligible taxpayers age 65 or older may deduct up to $6,000, or as much as $12,000 for a jointly filing couple if both spouses qualify. This provision applies to tax years 2025 through 2028 and is available whether the taxpayer itemizes or takes the standard deduction.

Income Limits and Eligibility

The deduction generally begins phasing out above modified adjusted gross income of $75,000 for single taxpayers and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly, at a rate of 6% of income above the threshold. Married taxpayers must generally file jointly to claim it. Other identification requirements also apply.

How the Tax Savings Work

The deduction lowers taxable income; it is not a $6,000 check from the IRS. At a 12% marginal tax rate, an additional $6,000 deduction could potentially save around $720, assuming the taxpayer can use the full deduction. The actual benefit depends on the complete tax return.

Social Security Income Thresholds

For single filers, the familiar combined-income thresholds are $25,000 and $34,000; for married couples filing jointly, $32,000 and $44,000. These rules determine how much of Social Security benefits may be taxable. The additional senior deduction does not replace those calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you qualify without receiving Social Security? Yes, if age and other requirements are met. Does the deduction eliminate tax on every retiree’s benefits? No. Can a 62-year-old claimant use it? Not until the applicable age requirement is met.
