Can You Still Claim Solar Tax Credits in 2026?

Did the 30% federal solar tax credit end? Learn how the 2025 deadline affects 2026 projects and unused credits.

The following is a practical overview of the rules and common questions for taxpayers in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Broward County, and South Florida.

Is the 30% Residential Solar Credit Available?

Generally no for new eligible residential clean energy expenditures after December 31, 2025. Federal legislation accelerated the end of the Residential Clean Energy Credit, which previously covered 30% of qualifying residential solar costs.

Projects That Crossed Into 2026

A signed contract or deposit in 2025 usually is not enough. For these residential clean energy rules, expenditures generally are treated as made when the original installation is completed. If a project was not completed until 2026, it generally will not qualify for the expired residential credit.

What if Your System Was Installed in 2025?

A qualifying completed 2025 installation may still support a 30% credit on the 2025 federal return, generally using Form 5695. Keep invoices, payment records, installation confirmations, and documents for eligible equipment and labor.

Unused Credit Carryforwards

The credit was generally nonrefundable. If a qualifying credit from an earlier year exceeded the taxpayer’s allowable use for that year, an unused amount may be carried forward under the applicable rules. Expiration for new installations does not automatically erase a valid carryforward.

Other Energy Incentives

Some other federal residential energy improvement incentives also expired after 2025. Business clean electricity projects are subject to separate, more complicated rules and timing restrictions. Florida homeowners should also evaluate applicable state tax treatment and available utility incentives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you claim the credit for a new 2026 home solar installation? Generally no. What if installation finished in 2025? You may qualify. Can earlier unused credits survive? Potentially, subject to the carryforward rules.
